Camellia Points of Interest in Germany

Germany's most famous tree: The Pillnitz Camellia. More than 250 years old.

6 - Frankfurt/Main:
Camellia exhibitions in the "Palmengarden, early March.

7- Landau:
Several potted camellias older than 150 years. Among them a wild form like that in Pillnitz.

8 - Stuttgart:
Good indoor collection of rather old Camellia species in the Botanical park "Wilhelmina".

9- Bodensee:
Private Camellia garden of Rosemary Krämer.

Climatic situation: Germany has only partial maritim influence. Normally there are harsh, cold winters too cold to reliably plant camellias outdoor. Some regions have a slight advantage: the Wingst area, the Ruhr region near Essen and the upper Rhein valley from Freiburg to Frankfurt. Frankfurt has the most number of sunny days in Germany. Camellias in these regions have some chance not to barksplit or freeze back every year. Camellias do rather well in open ground in these regions, only harsh frost periods do damage. In other gardens, camellias experience a regular frost damage, the yearly shoots are small, and plants reach heights from 1-2 meter, if one is lucky.

Peter Fischer has the official frost test station in Germany, he always encourages us with some success to try outdoor planting, and we alltogether wait for more cold resistant camellias.
