Copperplate of the artificial island of Deshima in Nagasaki, Japan. Place of the trading post of the Dutch East Indian Company.

1675:
The gardener George Meister started his journey to Japan with the Dutch East India Company.
From DEZ 1677 till DEZ 1687 he was the gardener of Andreas Cleyer in Batavia. Two visits to Japan (Deshima at Nagasaki) in 1682-1684 and 1685-1687. In 1689 he was back at Dresden, Germany.

Treatease on human life and Tea and Coffee, in Dutch. He adviced to take 100 - 200 cups of tea daily.

1683:
Engelbert Kaempfer started his journey to Japan, via Moscow, Baku, Isfahan (Persia), Ceylon, Batavia (Java), Siam. 24. 9. 1690 - 31.10.1692 in Deshima (Nagasaki, Japan). Two journeys to Edo (Tokyo). 1693 back in Leyden.(1712 KAE).

1689 CLE :

was 1682-86 in Nagasaki, "Miscellanea Curiosa": 30 articles with japanese plant drawings, under which please find the first western description, and figure (see), of the Camellia japonica (his transliteration: 'Tsumacky'). See also 1692 Mei.

Mentzel, Christian (1622-1701): Botanica Iaponica.
Manuscript: libri picturati 41.42 in Berlin, 599 pages.
Mentzel used drawings made by Japanese, send to him bei Cleyer.

1690:
On his journey back from Batavia, George Meister brought 16 Tea plants raised from seed he himself gathered from Japan, in "rather good state" to the Cape of Good Hope. On board are also 138195 ship pounds (appr. 20.000.000 Kg ?) of Chinese tea. (1692 MEI)
