This is a remarkable attempt to identify old Camellia trees in the spectacular gardens in the district of Lucca (Tuscany). 89 specimen were scientifically described, with given location and a small icon (mostly historical). The book is very well done, with excellent printing, paper and binding. However, the aim of the book is scientific, not for the aesthetic book-hunter. My first impression about the rather expensive book was disappointment. The reason was that there are 6 icons displayed per page in the illustration part, just large enough to display the specimen, the full beauty of the icons do not come out ( I guess that the book would be too expensive with one icon per page). Sample page. of the picture part.

Nevertheless, this book sets a landmark in the thoroughly identification and description of ancient living camellia trees. Any further attempts (hopefully there will be much more) will be measured on the very high quality and scientific standards set by this publication. This book is a must for everybody who is interested in historical camellia trees. My disappointment disappeared by reading and using the book.
